Ex-cop to die by hanging for killing colleague

High Court, presided over by Justice Agwu Umah Kalu, has sentenced a former police officer, Corporal Umaru Mohammed to death by hanging over the killing of another police man.

Corporal Umaru Mohammed, who was attached to the Abia State Government House had on July 19, 2011, shot and killed Corporal Clement Amaechi, who was also attached to the Government House.

The incident happened at late Amaechi's official residence, 19B, Okpara Avenue, GRA, Umuahia.

Handing down the judgment, Justice Agwu Umah Kalu said that the prosecution had proved beyond doubt that the gunshots fired by Umaru Mohammed at close range killed the deceased.

According to him, the offence was punishable under section 319, Cap 1 of the criminal code as applicable to AbiaState.

Justice Kalu said that the accused deserved no sympathy and ordered that he be hanged on the neck until he dies, saying that it would serve as a deterrent to those who may want to embark on such senseless ventures.

When the incident happened, the police subjected Umaru Mohammed to orderly room trial, found him guilty and he was dismissed which made way for the High court to try him after the matter was remitted from the Magistrate Court.
